About Us

Empirical Nature is an independent biodiversity data consultancy, founded by Becky Turner and supported by a network of trusted collaborators. We focus on helping conservation organisations make effective use of available evidence to support better decision-making for nature.

Our work sits at the interface of research and practice, with particular specialisms in biodiversity monitoring and data analytics, ecological modelling, knowledge exchange and science translation. We work collaboratively with organisations to understand their questions, carry out research, evaluate evidence, and apply insights to conservation practice.

Our Mission

Our mission is to support better decisions for nature through high-quality R&D and applied science. We help organisations and research teams to collect, analyse, interpret, and use biodiversity data with clarity and confidence.

What We Do

Biodiversity Data — support to identify, collate, clean, assess, and interpret biodiversity data from multiple sources, including monitoring schemes and online databases.

Monitoring Programme Design and Evaluation — review, and evaluation of biodiversity monitoring programmes to ensure data collection is aligned with clear objectives, practical constraints, and decision-making needs.

Data Analysis and Modelling — Statistical analysis and ecological modelling to understand patterns, trends, uncertainty, and drivers of biodiversity change.

GIS & Remote Sensing — Spatial analysis, mapping, and remote sensing support for spatial conservation planning projects.

Stakeholder Consultation and Evidence Synthesis — Interviews, focus groups, surveys, workshops, and evidence reviews to gather insight, and synthesise knowledge to support research, policy, and practice.

Research Consulting and Knowledge Exchange — Applied research support from scoping to delivery, including research design, method development, co-production, data integration, reporting, and interpretation.

Training and Outreach — Bespoke training, workshops, and outreach activities to build skills, improve confidence with biodiversity data, and support wider engagement with evidence-led conservation.

Becky is very thorough and a fountain of knowledge so I’m sure you’ll find her a pleasure to work with
